What Materials Can Be Recycled at Inland Concrete Recycling?

At Inland Concrete Recycling, we accept five types of masonry materials for recycling at our Langley drop-off facility and through our mobile crushing service. Understanding what we can and cannot accept helps ensure smooth drop-offs and efficient processing.

Accepted Materials

1. Concrete

We accept all forms of clean concrete, including:

  • Foundation walls and footings: Basement walls, foundation slabs, concrete piers
  • Flatwork: Sidewalks, driveways, patios, garage floors
  • Structural elements: Columns, beams, slabs, precast panels
  • Curbs and barriers: Concrete curbs, Jersey barriers, k-rail
  • Pavement: Concrete roads, parking lots, airport runways
  • Decorative concrete: Stamped concrete, colored concrete (pigments are fine)

Reinforced concrete (containing rebar or wire mesh) is accepted but must be processed for metal separation. See our rebar recycling guide for details.

2. Asphalt

Asphalt pavement and surfaces are fully recyclable:

  • Asphalt roads and highways
  • Parking lot paving
  • Asphalt driveways
  • Asphalt path and trail surfaces
  • Cold mix and hot mix asphalt

Note: Asphalt shingles are not accepted at this time (these contain tar paper and adhesives that contaminate aggregate production).

3. Brick

Clean brick without mortar is ideal, but we can process brick with mortar attached:

  • Building brick (fired clay brick)
  • Pavers and paving brick
  • Face brick and common brick
  • Reclaimed heritage brick
  • Firebrick (kiln brick)

Tip: While mortar-free brick is preferred, we understand demolition often produces brick with attached mortar. Our crushing process can handle this, though it may slightly affect final aggregate quality.

4. Block

Concrete masonry units (CMU) of all types:

  • Standard concrete blocks (8", 10", 12" varieties)
  • Cinder blocks
  • Split-face blocks
  • Decorative concrete blocks
  • Hollow and solid blocks
  • Retaining wall blocks (without geogrid or adhesive)

5. Granite

Natural stone granite materials:

  • Granite curbs and edging
  • Granite countertops and slabs
  • Granite pavers and cobblestones
  • Monument granite
  • Crushed granite

Other natural stones may be accepted on a case-by-case basis. Contact us if you have limestone, sandstone, or other dimensional stone to recycle.

What We Don't Accept

To maintain high-quality recycled aggregate, we cannot accept materials with:

Contaminants

  • Wood: Lumber, plywood, formwork, framing must be removed
  • Metal: Rebar must be separated (we provide this service), but remove large metal pieces when possible
  • Garbage: Household waste, packaging, construction debris
  • Organics: Soil, vegetation, roots, sod
  • Plastics: Vapor barriers, insulation, piping, conduit

Hazardous Materials

  • Asbestos-containing materials: Including asbestos siding, pipe insulation, floor tiles (contact specialized disposal services)
  • Lead paint: Painted concrete must be tested; lead-painted materials require hazardous waste handling
  • Treated lumber: Pressure-treated wood in contact with concrete
  • Chemical residues: Materials contaminated with oils, solvents, or industrial chemicals

Problem Materials

  • Gypsum/drywall: Causes quality issues in crushed aggregate
  • Insulation: Fiberglass, spray foam, rigid foam contaminate the recycling stream
  • Roofing materials: Shingles, tar paper, membrane
  • Mixed loads with excessive contamination: Loads must be predominantly masonry materials

How to Prepare Materials for Recycling

Best Practices

  1. Separate materials by type if possible (concrete separate from asphalt, etc.)
  2. Remove obvious contaminants like wood, metal, and plastic
  3. Break materials into manageable sizes: Most facilities prefer pieces under 3 feet
  4. Inform us of rebar content when scheduling drop-off or mobile crushing
  5. Test for hazardous materials if demolishing structures built before 1980

Drop-off vs. Mobile Crushing

Drop-off Facility (Langley)

Best for:

  • Small to medium loads (under 200 tons)
  • Mixed material types
  • No-appointment convenience
  • Contractors with ongoing recycling needs

Accepted: All 5 material types listed above

Hours: M-F 7:00-4:30, Sat 8:30-3:30, Sunday by arrangement

Mobile Crushing Service

Best for:

  • Large projects (200+ ton minimum)
  • Single-site demolition
  • Projects where reusing material on-site is advantageous
  • Remote locations where hauling is expensive

Accepted: Primarily concrete, asphalt, and brick (call to discuss block and granite)

Service area: Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley (North Vancouver to Chilliwack)

What Happens to Recycled Materials?

Once accepted, your materials are processed into high-quality recycled aggregates:

Concrete Recycling Process

  1. Inspection: Materials are inspected for contaminants
  2. Crushing: Impact crusher reduces concrete to specified sizes
  3. Screening: Material is screened into different size fractions
  4. Metal separation: Magnetic separator removes any remaining rebar or wire mesh
  5. Stockpiling: Finished products are stockpiled by size and type

End Products

Recycled materials become:

  • 3/4" Road Base: For road construction, driveway base, sub-base applications
  • 3" Minus Concrete: For bulk fill, erosion control, drainage rock
  • Custom sizes: Available on request for specific applications

Environmental Impact

Every ton of material you recycle with us:

  • Diverts 1 ton from landfills: Extends landfill lifespan and reduces tipping fees
  • Replaces virgin aggregate: Reduces quarrying and environmental disruption
  • Reduces transportation emissions: Especially with mobile crushing (no hauling required)
  • Supports circular economy: Keeps materials in use instead of disposal

Pricing

Recycling is significantly cheaper than landfill disposal:

  • Landfill tipping fees: $120-180/ton
  • Our drop-off recycling: $30-60/ton (depending on material type and contamination)
  • Mobile crushing: Project-based pricing (typically 50-80% savings vs. disposal)
